Grade 8 Health Project #2

Safety in our Community

Health Project term 2 Due Date: DECEMBER 4th

Choose one of the following areas to research safety concerns, risks and injury for young people.
This project is to be done INDIVIDUALLY or with a PARTNER –
NO groups!

You need to make use of any community resources, and research the internet for standards/laws that may be in place to protect children and young people. Also, look for any pertinent statistics.
Create a power point to share with the class your findings, and include local pictures of the area you are researching.

Possible suggestions (but not limited to) include:
1. Playground Safety:
Interview Brian Green, and District Office to find out more about Playground Equipment standards. You might supervise playground duty one day, and make observations you can use in your presentation.
Are there changes that you could recommend to make GMCS playground safer?

2. As above, but with Village Playgrounds. Contact Village Office.

3. As above, but concentrating on the Boy’s & Girls’ Club. Contact Tonia Green/ Karey Ingalls.

4. As above, but concentrate on Grand Harbour Pool. Look at safety issues including lifeguard training.

5. Skateboard Park:
Interview Sherman Ross, Mr. Jones for information on equipment, and building a park. If a new park gets built at the proposed B & G Club expansion, what changes could be made? Discuss personal safety equipment, as well.

6. Winter Driving:
Interview an Insurance Agent (Cathy O’Neill), Department of Transportation (Dennis Green), or RCMP. What do young drivers need to be aware of? What are the statistics?
7. Other suggestion?

More Wellness Projects!

Students are passing in projects this week, but I thought I would post some other sites that students could be checking in on daily, or at home with their families:

www.fighthunger.org
www.thehungersite (6 charities in one)

Christmas Cards to our Troops:

Tis the season!!

Ok, Halloween is over and done with, so it must be time to start
thinking of Christmas, right?!
I won't tell anyone I have been listening to Christmas music
in my truck for two weeks now :o)
Some of the wellness projects my classes have been working on have included Christmas Shoeboxes and Christmas cards for our troops. There has been quite a variety of topics, from making school mates aware of diseases and Grand Manan Animal Welfare League, to raising money for school supplies in African Schools (Thanks, Mr. Wilson, for helping make this happen), and for Nigel Brown's health care expenses. Great job, Middle School! ! This is the LAST week to work on these.
FINAL EVALUATION SHEETS ARE TO BE INTHIS WEEK! (these are to be completed INDIVIDUALLY, regardless if you worked on your own, or in a group)

Students that finished early were encouraged to visit the websites
where they could start their own non-profit organization and
raise awareness for a cause.
Check it out at home!
As the first report card nears, I have spent this week helping students make sure everything is in their notebooks for collection. Make sure your notebook has been handed in!!
