LJ #7: Crime Mapping

For this LJ, you will be referring to the article from the Telegraph Journal, “Police Enlist help of public by pinpointing where crimes take place” (Thursday, April 7, 2011), as well as the website, www.crimemapping.com

1. Read the article, write a brief summary, including why police would use crime mapping.
2. Go to the website, www.crimemapping.com Be sure to go to the Canadian site (click Canadian Flag icon, top right). Type in Grand Manan, NB
3. What is the purpose of the radius tool?
4. Click on the Crimemapping.com logo, then click on New Brunswick. Click on police force.
5. Check out Crime Types Tab along the top. What are the most common types of crimes in Saint John? Click on any one of the crime icons. What purpose could the “how close am I?” link have?
6. How could this information be useful to families in NB? Police forces? You, as a future grad?
7. Click back on the crimemapping.com logo, and switch to United States map. Choose any three cities you think might have high crime rates. Tell me why you chose these three...did media influence your rationale?
8. For each of your three US cities, list the most common crime types.
9. What purpose could having this information hold? And to who?
